Feautre Post: Secondary Characters in Between the Lines Studios

Posted by Jimmy Davis On November - 6 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

225px-GwenSecondary characters have always been treated well by the Whedonverse.  The shows may focus around a central character like Buffy or Angel, but the other characters have importance and we care about them.  Even secondary characters only seen in a single episode have a depth or mystery about them that intrigues the viewer.  In fact, many of the major characters on Buffy the Vampire Slayer started out as secondary characters.  Spike, Anya, Tara, Warren, and Jonathan all lived well past their intended shelf lives and enriched our television experience.  So obviously, secondary characters are very important to the overall show.  Likewise, these characters are invaluable to Angel Between the Lines (ABTL).

The writers have taken some characters that received very little screen time in the original “Angel” series and have given them a story of their own, fleshing out the character that the fans never really got to know.  “My character is in one memorable scene in the first season of Angel a very funny scene, which we have to reenact. But it’s so interesting that the writers took that character and developed him fully. Hawkins was just a sleazy Wolfram and Hart lawyer and now he has a back story and you find out what he had been through since that moment,” said Robin Burdge.

Character Blog: Remind Me Again Why I’m Doing This?

Leftover Chinese takeaway does not a balanced breakfast make, but I’m running late this morning so it will have to do. Hoping I’ll have time to pick something up, it’s that or more re-heated beef Chow Mein. I ordered too much, it was Fred’s favourite dish and we’d always run out. I didn’t get it from the usual place encase they recognised my voice and ask how Angel and everyone was (we saved the owners from a Serparvo Demons once.) The Blue Sun restaurant turned out to be a good alternative, though the fortune cookies were some of the strangest I’ve read. (Yes, I was lead to believe that the main function of a blog was to discuss eating habits. It seemed like a good place to start – though that could be the lack of sleep and post-celebratory hangover talking.)

“99 bottles of beer on the wall…” Angel Between the Lines, Episode 1 Review

(Editor’s Note: We put out a call for folks outside of Between the Lines Studios to review episodes of Angel Between the Lines. The first episode is reviewed by Haunt. If you’re interested in writing a review please let us know – betweenthelinesstudios-at-gmail.com.)

I’ve been an extremely vocal defender of Angel: The Series since it’s premier 10 years ago. It tends to be treated like something of the red-headed stepchild of the Jossverse, often ignored and left off of the ubiquitous “Best of” and “Favorites” lists that flood the internet. In my opinion it was, in many ways, better than it’s parent series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. (Let that comment serve as a fair warning…)

Having never listened to any of the previous Between the Lines productions I didn’t really know what to expect. I have to say I am pleasantly surprised. The writers, cast and crew clearly know the material… naturally. But they also understand and respect the characters. The story fits perfectly into the space between seasons, and the production quality is pretty good. It will take a lot of getting used to, hearing other actors give voice to my favorite characters, but they did a great job.

The audio drama medium enjoys the same advantage that certain other tie-in formats such as comics share. Namely that they’re not limited by a television production budget or special effects capabilities. This story feels perfectly in line with what the Mutant Enemy writers might have done, but likely avoided because of the cheesiness of seeing miniaturized actors either blue-screened or interacting with oversized styrofoam set pieces. And while I would certainly love to see a “real life” giant Blue Sun Chinese food carton, it’s an effect probably best served by our imaginations rather than a props department. (Loved that little touch, btw… Blue Sun… heh.)

A few of my favorite bits (besides the Firefly/Serenity shout out)…

- The letter from Fred to Willow.

- Phantom Dennis is not forgotten. Yay!

- Gunn’s snarky nicknames for Connor. “Short Round”… nice. :)

- Lorne’s phone home message.

- Angel’s hallucinatory argument with Spike.

- “Fine. Cavemen win.”

Keep up the great work gang. I look forward to future episodes. And thanks for loving these otherwise neglected characters.

~ Haunt

Notes from the Exec Team: Auditions & Tabz

As I write this, it’s March 21st, 2009 and we’re 15 minutes away from closing auditions for Angel Between the Lines. You’re reading this way after the fact, but I wanted to let you know what this moment in time was like.

Now, most people don’t know, or might be surprised to know. I really don’t do a lot for auditions. I promote, that’s kind of my thing, but Kim handles most of the producer’s role of auditions. She gets tons of support from our Associate Producers – Heidi and Larissa. I get to play voyeur and watch the process. And it is a huge process. This year there’s nearly 100 people auditioning and most of them for multiple roles. That’s a lot of sound files!

Even though the process isn’t finished yet, I already know it’s going to be amazing.

Behind the Story: Author Kevin Cummings

Posted by Tabz On October - 20 - 2009 1 COMMENT

ABtLS1DuluthitunesKevin Cummings is the Parsec Award-winning humorist behind the popular Short Cummings Audio podcast.  Each episode features a short, funny story that explores the humor to be found in ordinary life.  Listeners often feel that Kevin must be watching their lives because the experiences he writes about feel so familiar to them.

Kevin got his start writing humor as a stringer for The Davis County Clipper in the early nineties when he wrote an allegedly-funny weekly column.  When a new editor took the paper in a new direction, the column was axed.  In June of 2006 he resurrected the column as a podcast and has grown an audience of devoted fans.

In the Fall of 2009 he released a book-length collection of essays entitled Happily Domesticated.  In addition to material from the podcast, the book features a dozen essays from his days with the newspaper.  Information about the book and podcast can be found at Kevin’s newly redesigned web-site at http://www.HappilyDomesticated.com

His other forays into new media and blogging include working as an actor and director for the Between the Lines Studios and as a game review for TechTalkforFamilies. He particularly enjoyed writing Duluth as part of the Angel Between the Lines project.

Notes from the Executive Team – Auditions (The Associate Producers)

hamsterWritten on March 22, 2009

Picture a hamster running on a wheel. Picture that hamster running really fast. Now picture that hamster collapsing by its water bottle, tired, but feeling accomplished.

It’s a day after the auditions for Angel Between the Lines have closed, and I feel like that hamster.

Don’t get me wrong – Buffy Between the Lines has brought me wonderful memories, friends, and opportunities that wouldn’t have occurred otherwise. But, boy, is it a lot of work.

Audition time for me means lots of emailing back and forth between me and Kim, Heidi and Tabz, and lots of staring at spreadsheets and audio files. It means emailing all those who auditioned and laying the foundation for the next step of the audition process: callbacks.

As I’ve said, it is a lot of work. That happens when you work on an international audio drama with hundreds of people. But, as I’ve also said, it’s very rewarding. There’s something so exciting and enjoyable about being at the start of it all: seeing the auditions come in and getting excited that so many people auditioned. It makes me very happy to be involved in the fandom in a project such as this. I can’t wait to see what’s in store next!

- Larissa

——-

So it’s the dawn after the eve of the night that auditions ended. I’m writing this on March 22nd and I am so excited.

I joined the crew after the auditions for BBTLs Season 2 so I never got to audition for a role. So this has been my first time through the audition process. I don’t envy the work that Kim, Heidi and Larissa have ahead of them to turn all of the audtions into a cast for ABTLs. Plus I can’t wait to find out if I have a role in the new production, and if I don’t then it’s still been fun trying…

As Tabz’s has said if you didn’t get involved this time around then please do so when Firefly Between the Lines kicks off. I was nervous about getting involved when I first contacted the crew having never done anything like this before. I needn’t have been, everyone is so welcoming and helpful, so if you’re not sure what to do then I encourage you to give it a try…
